Demo vs Full Game

Release status

The Sandcastle demo is live on Steam as of August 6, 2026. The full game remains to be announced—do not expect the complete beach roster or final feature set until Bubblebird Studio and Future Friends Games ship the paid release. This page compares known demo scope with Steam store promises for the full sandbox.

Beaches and layouts

The demo includes Base Beach and Barrier Beach, each with distinct shore geometry and wave exposure. Steam marketing for the full game describes roughly ten beach layouts, including lagoon, island, sand barrier, delta, and atoll variants. Those additional shores—Lagoon, Island, Delta, and Atoll—are documented here as planned full-game content, not demo-playable unless a future patch changes that.

Environmental variety is not cosmetic alone. Lagoon calm, barrier wave fetch, and delta channels should alter moat strategy and erosion patterns once unlocked. Use the demo to master core physics on Base and Barrier before chasing layout-specific challenges later.

Tools, physics, and customization

Core systems appear in the demo: wet sand gathering, carving, moats, embellishments, tides, and shore collectibles. Starfish unlock customization such as sand type, beach layout, and size options according to store text—demo unlocks may be subsetted until the full game ships.

Physics depth—moisture, compaction, pressure slump, and wave pooling—is representative of the final vision per developer descriptions. Read Sand Physics and Tide Erosion for mechanics that should carry forward.

Content and progression

Hidden objects and shore treasures (shells, driftwood, pebbles, seaweed) appear in the demo and expand in the full release per store bullet points. There is no competitive multiplayer in either version; both are calm single-player sandboxes.

Progression timing differs: the demo is a taste without a announced save transfer policy. Treat starfish and customization experiments as skill-building. Follow Updates Hub for any news on saves or cross-version unlocks.

When to wishlist vs keep playing the demo

Wishlist the main Steam page if you want notification when the full game leaves “To be announced.” Keep playing the demo if you want to refine wall angles (Build Strong Walls), moat routing (Carve Moats), and tide defenses (Tide Defense Checklist) without spending money yet.

Why Bubblebird shipped a demo first

Early access to physics matters more here than in block builders because feel sells the fantasy. The demo teaches moisture gathering, compaction, and tide feedback loops that trailers only hint at. Playing clarifies whether you enjoy observation-heavy sessions—watching foam lines—versus constant sculpting.

When the full game launches, expect additional tools and beaches rather than a separate game mode. Sandcastle Review notes the demo already justifies wishlisting if those loops relax you.

Marketing versus playable truth

Trailers show beaches and lighting not guaranteed in demo builds. Trust Demo Hub and Beaches Hub for playable truth; treat lagoon and atoll footage as forward-looking unless patch notes say otherwise.

Developer background context

Bubblebird Studio’s prior cozy titles suggest polish focus over live-service scope—expect expansion via beaches and tools rather than seasonal battle passes.
