How to Play Sandcastle
A calm first-session walkthrough for the Steam demo beaches.
Your first session
Sandcastle drops you on a sun-warmed shore with no fail state and no mission timer. The goal is whatever you want it to be: a tall keep, a wide curtain wall, a moat puzzle, or a decorated sculpture dotted with shells. The demo (August 2026) includes Base Beach and Barrier Beach; the full game is not released yet and will add more layouts later.
Launch through Demo Download instructions if you have not installed yet. Skim Controls for mouse-only or controller-friendly setup—the game surfaces contextual prompts when you select tools.
Core loop: gather, shape, wait, adapt
Most sessions follow a gentle rhythm. Gather damp sand near the waterline where moisture is highest. Shape walls and towers using digging and carving tools—see Digging Tools and Carving Tools for roles. Embellish with driftwood, pebbles, shells, and seaweed from Shore Treasures. Wait for the tide to rise and fall, then adapt cracks and eroded faces.
Sand responds to pressure and moisture (Sand Physics). Packing sand firmly creates sturdier faces; dry ridges crumble faster. Carving too thin invites slumps detailed in Moisture and Stability.
Choosing a beach
Base Beach (Base Beach guide) offers a forgiving flat stretch for first towers. Barrier Beach (Barrier Beach guide) introduces stronger wave fetch—move here once you can protect a keep with Protect From the Tide. Lagoon, island, delta, and atoll layouts are planned for the full game (Beaches Hub).
Tools unlock through play
Tools appear as the demo introduces systems—do not expect every implement in minute one. Start with broad shaping, then refine battlements and moats. Building Tips explains when to switch tools instead of forcing one mode for every task.
Tides without stress
Tides are predictable ambience, not a punishment clock. Still, water removes sand where flow concentrates. Before the water reaches your wall, read Carve Moats and run the Tide Defense Checklist mentally. Tide Erosion explains why corners and low caps fail first.
Collectibles and unlocks
Walk the shore between builds to spot starfish and small treasures. Starfish feed beach customization unlocks (Starfish Collectibles). Find Collectibles suggests efficient search patterns without turning the beach into a checklist chore.
When to stop for the day
Because there is no match end, stop when you are satisfied with a screenshot or a stable structure after a full tide cycle. Wishlist the main Steam page if you want the full release; track changes on Demo Launch Update. For deeper defense, continue to Build Strong Walls.
Session templates
Tutorial session (30 minutes): spawn on Base, gather wet sand, raise a knee-high oval wall, carve one gap, watch foam touch without fixing anything yet. Note where sand darkens when wet—that visual cue returns in every guide.
Defense session (45 minutes): add a buttress, cut a partial moat with exit, run the Tide Defense Checklist, then repair one eroded face.
Collectible session (20 minutes): walk retreating tideline, pick up starfish and shells, decorate a stable platform only.
Mental model for failures
When a tower slumps, ask moisture, then thickness, then water flow—in that order. Random blaming usually means one of those three was ignored. The simulation is deterministic enough that repeating the same mistake yields the same collapse, which is good for learning.
Accessibility of the cozy pitch
No combat timers, no hostile NPCs, no multiplayer chat—Sandcastle suits background listening or podcast play. Mouse-only support helps players who avoid chorded keyboard shortcuts. If overwhelm hits, shrink the build footprint; the beach does not grade you.
Closing the session
End by placing one decoration you like, screenshot, then log off. Clean stops feel better than abandoning mid-collapse unless you are studying failure on purpose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers drawn from the same systems covered above.
Is there a campaign or story mode?
No traditional campaign. Sandcastle is open sandbox play on the beach with optional collectible unlocks.
Can I undo mistakes?
You reshape sand with tools rather than an undo stack. Rebuild damaged sections or repack wet sand along cracks.
Does the demo teach all tools at once?
Tools roll out gradually. Revisit Tools Hub pages as new implements appear in your session.
What happens when the tide destroys my castle?
The beach resets visually over time as you rebuild. Treat failures as physics feedback, not game overs.
Is Sandcastle multiplayer?
No. The demo and announced full game are single-player only.
Where do I see exact controls?
Use in-game prompts when selecting tools. The Controls page summarizes options without listing unverified binds.
